Research and Extension Programs at the Southern Piedmont Agricultural Research and Extension Center are centered around flue-cured tobacco, forages crops and specialty crops (small fruits, wine grapes, and other horticultural crops). Research efforts focus on cultural practices, cultivar development and evaluation, disease control and insect control.

The majority of research at SPAREC involves tobacco related projects, but current and future research is shifting into other areas for increased diversification. These areas include forage and livestock production, agroforestry, alternative uses of tobacco (for production of pharmaceuticals), and high-value niche crops. Additionally, the Center conducts research programs on cotton, corn, small grains, soybeans, and other crops of economic importance to central Virginia.

The public is always welcome at the Center and group tours are available. Field days are held annually to showcase ongoing research.
